Overview

Paediatric First Aid provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond confidently to emergencies involving infants and children. Through realistic, hands-on training, delegates learn how to assess incidents, provide life-saving first aid, and manage a wide range of childhood illnesses and injuries. Designed to meet current UK requirements, this course helps ensure anyone responsible for children can act quickly and effectively in an emergency.

Suitable for anyone responsible for the care of infants and children, including nursery and preschool staff, childminders, teachers, teaching assistants, nannies, au pairs, children's activity leaders, sports coaches, parents, grandparents, and carers. Particularly relevant for childcare settings, schools, early years providers, and anyone whose role requires paediatric first aid training.

• The role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider

• How to assess emergency situations involving infants and children

• Infant and child CPR techniques

• Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

• Recovery position for babies and children

• How to recognise and manage choking emergencies

• Treatment of unconscious casualties, severe bleeding, and shock

• Managing burns, scalds, fractures, sprains, and head or spinal injuries

• Responding to asthma attacks, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, seizures, and febrile convulsions

• Recognition and treatment of meningitis, diabetes, poisoning, temperature-related illnesses, and other common medical emergencies

• Treatment of eye, ear, nose, bite, and sting injuries

• Recording incidents and following emergency procedures

Course Format

Delivered in person over either one or two days, depending on the qualification selected. The course combines classroom learning with practical demonstrations and realistic scenario-based exercises, allowing delegates to develop confidence through hands-on practice. Continuous practical assessment takes place throughout the course with guidance and feedback from experienced trainers.

Certification

Delegates who successfully complete the course receive a nationally recognised Paediatric First Aid Certificate, valid for three years.
